One of the United States based airlines that is one of the most inexpensive airlines to travel on is Frontier Airlines. If you’re traveling throughout the US, Mexico and Caribbean on a budget Frontier Airlines may be the airline you need to be using. Once, I traveled to Austin Texas with my son and paid $60 round-trip total for BOTH of our tickets! Believe it or not, you can travel cheap. Frontier Airlines is fastly becoming my favorite family friendly airline, and here is why.
Why Frontier Airlines Is Becoming The Most Family Friendly Airline
Kids Fly Free
As of 2019, Frontier Airline has offered an amazing deal for families that is quite notably the number 1 reason that makes Frontier Airline perfect for families. Kids Fly Free is an extra deal offered to Discount Den Members. It allows for (1) child to fly free with an adult (15 years or older) as long as they’re a Discount Den Member or booked and flying with said member. Discount Dem Members can have 5 people fly with them to receive a Discount Den price. So, if you and two other adults are flying with three children on a Kids Fly Free day, then all the children would be flying at no cost! Amazing, right?!
Here is the catch that you’ll notice. Not every day is a Kids Fly Free day. It sucks, I know. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still take advantage of this awesome deal. Kids Fly Free is offered a few days a week ( it looks like more in the mid-week), and those days vary per location. So this may or may not work for your traveling needs. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump on the Discount Den train… Or should I say plane?
Discount Den Membership is a necessity if you are choosing Frontier Airlines to be your carrier of choice. If you travel multiple times a year and/or travel with multiple people, then Discount Den could save you a lot of money throughout the year. Here is how it works:
Discount Den is a yearly membership that cost about $60 for the year. Once you sign-up you’re ready to start saving. You’ll notice when you book a flight that you’ll see two different prices, regular and Discount Den. In the image below you can see just that. In this specific flight I will save an extra $20 round trip! If I were to take similar flights 3 more times within the year, then the Discount Den Membership has paid for itself. This does NOT include any savings you accrual with Kids Fly Free.
Families First on Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines understands the stress is can cause to travel with kids. That is why they allow families to board after Zone 1 & priority boarding. This is great when you’re ready to get on the plane and get yourself and kids settled.
Because Frontier Airlines is a discount airline, there are some costs that you normally wouldn’t gain on other carriers. Preferred seating is one of them. With pre-assigned seating you will have to pay, but you will also ensure that you and your family are seated together.
With that being said, you don’t have to choose pre-assigned seating. You do take a risk of not sitting near your child. I personally have never chose pre-assigned seating and I have never had an issue of sitting away from my son. But again, it is a possibility that you could be seated apart from your child.
Family Fun With Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines aims for family fun, making it another reason why it is becoming one of the most family friendly airlines. Have you ever noticed the different animals on the wings of the planes? Want to know more about those animals? Frontier Airlines offers trading cards with information about the animals on them. Goal? Collect them all!
Want the kids to visualize where they are going on a map? Frontier Airlines offers a free printable map that the kids can use to plot their travels. You can print the map the map HERE.
You can commemorate your flight with Frontier Airlines by printing a flight certificate that the crew can sign. This is perfect if it is their first time flight. If you want this free souvenir from your flight, you can print it HERE.
They also have an activity book you can print to keep the kids busy on the flight. It consist of 4 pages that include; a coloring page, a maze, map to color and a grid to recreate an image of Polly The Parrot. Go ahead and print it out ahead of time at this link HERE.
Saving More With Frontier Airlines
There are additional ways to save with Frontier Airlines. I have the Frontier Credit Card and earned 40k points by meeting the criteria to earn those points when I signed up. The 40k points is what I’m using to fly my son and myself to our Spring Break destination.
The yearly fee is $79. However, you get a $100 Frontier Airlines voucher once you pay. Making it a $21 profit. Mind you, this really only works if you’re disciplined enough to pay your card off monthly so you won’t gain a lot of interest fees.
One of the downfalls with Frontier Airlines is the baggage fees. It is best to purchase your bags during initial booking, as this will be the cheapest time to add your baggage. I’m personally taking one bag for my son and I to share. I’m utilizing packing cubes to make sure it fits. If this was a short trip, I’d take a small backpack as my personal item to not pay any baggage fees. As long as your personal item fits underneath the front seat, you should be good to go.
I’ll be utilizing Frontier Airlines for several flights this year since I’ve become a Discount Den Member. I’ll keep you updated and let you all know how it goes. With the prices that Frontier Airlines is offering, I can’t afford not to go somewhere!
