Why You Should Spend a Day in South Haven, Michigan

I was born and raised in South East Michigan, in a small town near the Ohio border. We didn’t get around much in Michigan and I never really appreciated the beauty that Michigan has until I moved. Now that I am gone, I want to actually visit! Ironic, seeing as I hated it when I was there.

Every summer my son visits his grandmothers up North (Michigan and Ohio). I flew him up there in the beginning of June, my sister and brother-in-law decided to come at the same time so that we could get some much-needed family time. While we were there we had wonderful visits with family and had some great nights sitting with the cool grass between our toes while sitting by the fire pit. We also adventured out and visited a little place that none of us have been before, somewhere quite close that I wished we would have known about when we were younger; South Haven, Michigan.

It’s a gorgeous small beach town that sits on the shores of Lake Michigan. The people were friendly, the food there was great and the weather was awesome! We arrived around 12 noon to find the beach not too crowded, which was great to get a close spot near the water. In just short walking distance, we were able to view the beauty of the light house, of which is a great photo opportunity.

We stayed on the beach for hours! It was such a relaxing time. The beach-goers grew as the day went on, but not too crowded that you didn’t enjoy yourself. I paid for it royally with a burn unlike any burn I have ever had before! I’m pretty good about getting lathered up with sun screen, but that day I decided it was too much work to dig into the bag and find it.

Lesson learned.

Parking was $9, cheap for a gorgeous day at the Lake. Lake Michigan’s water was super cold! But so clear and gorgeous! One thing you don’t have to worry about when swimming the one of the great lakes… Sharks. The sand was like sugar and felt great in between my toes. I loved that they had a playground right on the beach. Singing on the swings was you watch the water sit beneath the sky was an amazing, and breezy was to experience it.

You could also go pretty far out with the water still not being deep. We walked along the shore before we decided to head to our hotel and get changed for dinner. The homes that over look the water are amazing! I would die to have one of those homes! We should have come with lunch prepared, but we opted in for ice cream and waiting for dinner.

I had already looked up what were some great restaurants in the area. One that was mentioned that I actually looked up was Taste.

We made an awesome decision going there.

The food was phenomenal.

The service was exceptional.

The atmosphere was awesome.

I had the best Mac & Cheese ever.

Mac & Cheese with smoked Gouda. So good. I also had some awesome spicy fried shrimp that were to die for!

We spent around $100 for the 5 of us, so $20/person when you break it down. My sister had drunk also, of which she said was delicious. Our service was amazing! Some of the best service I’ve ever had a restaurant! The place was busy, yet quiet. Our wait for our food wasn’t too long either. We were stuffed when it was time to go. We had a great dinner there and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Well worth a visit and if I am in South Haven again, I will definitely be back!

We topped the night off with s stroll by the water. It was a cool and relaxing night with a gorgeous view (of course).

We had such a great and relaxing time and the chances of us returning are very high!

We stayed at Holiday Inn-South Haven. It was about 10 minutes from the beach and very convenient to get to. The bed was comfortable and was a great room size. As with most Holiday Inns, they include breakfast with the cost of the room. They breakfasts at each Holiday Inn differ from each location. This one had a great selection of items from healthy to your most favorite breakfast carbs! The facility is equipped with a workout room, indoor pool and business center; so if you want a quick workout, get some business done or take a late night swim then this is the place for you! I was lucky enough to have enough points earned for this stay to be absolutely free, which is even more of a bonus! The trip itself was rather cheap, besides gas, parking and food we didn’t come out-of-pocket much.

If you’re in South Michigan anytime soon, you definitely want to add South Haven to your list! And don’t let the cold winter months steer you away, they even have winter fun for those of you who don’t mind having fun in the winter snow!
